I teach 3rd grade in a title 1 school. Many of my students come to school as an escape. I try to make my classroom as comfortable and a place they enjoy coming back to every day. I also try to make learning fun and exciting. They are not going to remember the day to day skills but they will remember the fun we had learning those skills.
