As a 5th grade inclusion special education teacher, one of the most impactful realizations I had during my time in 4th grade was the number of students coming to school without their basic hygiene needs met. While our school does have some supplies available, I noticed that many students were too embarrassed to ask for help. Even when supplies were accessible, students had to miss valuable instructional time going to the office or nurse—only to sometimes find that the items they needed weren’t available. In some cases, students simply forgot essentials in the rush of a difficult morning. In others, the reality is that those resources are not available at home. No child should feel shame for their circumstances. That’s why I created the Student Care Cart—a discreet, judgment-free hygiene station open to all students on our hallway. No questions asked, no permission needed, no stigma attached. When students’ hygiene needs are met, their confidence increases and their ability to focus and succeed academically
